Don’t book in advance for your summer vacation because two Bay Area airports are seeing big drops in flights according to USA TODAY analysis.

The paper said airlines can cut flying capacity two different ways: by cutting the number of daily flights on a certain route or using smaller planes with fewer seats.

The paper looked at the “Official Airline Guide” for June 2009 and found a 19.1% drop in service at Oakland and a 16.9% drop in San Jose by this summer.

Some of the cutbacks have already happened while others are still in the hopper.

The cuts are a direct result of a dropoff in business travel.
Domestic schedules saw the deepest cuts.

USA TODAY said service at the country’s top business airports (New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver and Minneapolis) is faring better.

On the Kuala Lumpur sector, Emirates will add two flights to its existing 12 flights-a-week service, bringing the total to 14 a week. On the Jakarta sector, Emirates will expand its current daily service to 10 flights a week.

Richard Vaughan, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice-President, Commercial Operations Worldwide, said: “Despite the current economic environment, the Middle East and Far East continue to register growth in their travel and tourism industries. In the Far East these industries are expected to post average annual gains of 6.3 per cent over the coming 10 years. While Malaysia continues to be a leading holiday destination, Indonesia is investing significantly in developing its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) infrastructure in order to get a slice of the bustling conference market.

The announcement closely follows the release of World Bank forecasts that point to 5.3 per cent rise in the gross domestic product of the Far East this year.
